Smith & Chen asked:

As you know, I am a physician. It's part of my profession to keep abreast of what's happening in medical /health research. Being retired helps, because doctors simply do not generally have the "extra time" to devote to the scientific literature.

But I do. And I love it. I am one of those individuals who really enjoys …brace yourself…chemistry. When I'm done here, you should be excited too, especially if you are interested in sports nutrition and antioxidants, though not necessarily in that order.

Sports nutrition is a vast industry with emphasis on optimizing PERFORMANCE. Off hand, I can think of quite a few categories involving sports nutrition:

* sports nutrition and supplements for athletes,

* sports nutrition and athletic performance,

* sports nutrition and body building,

* sports nutrition and endurance training,

* sports nutrition and special diets in a variety of sports,

* sports nutrition and strength training,

* sports nutrition for running, jogging, walking, skiing, swimming

* There's even Rocky Mountain sports nutrition

* …the list is endless.

So far, no surprises, huh? Well, here's one for you. Did you know that when you exercise intensively you INCREASE the free radical burden in your body? If you're a serious sports enthusiast, you should know that.

But…the real news is what science is now finding out about that free radical burden of yours. You should pay close attention here.

Suddenly, chemistry gets real personal.

Everyone of us has, what may be called, our antioxidant protective capacity. That means our bodies normally utilize antioxidants to protect us against the harmful impact of free radicals.

First of all, what are antioxidants? They are molecular substances which offset free radical damage to the body. Antioxidants, "quench" free radicals (for lack of a better metaphor) neutralizing their damaging effects on the cells of the body.

* Antioxidants are found in foods such as cranberries, green tea and even chocolate.

* Antioxidants are found in vitamins such vitamin C and E.

* Antioxidants are found in carotenoids such as beta-carotene.

* Antioxidants are found in many substances supplied by the body such as glutathione.

* Antioxidants are found in many herbs and enzymes.

The impact of antioxidants is boosted by glyconutrients to offset free radicals in your body…and, as a result of your athletic exertions.

Antioxidant capacity must be provided in your sports nutrition regimen or you could be "robbing Peter to pay Paul" with your workouts. As you will see, without a glyconutrional presence in your sports nutrition, the healthful gains made by your physical workouts will be offset by your own free radical burden.

Free radicals, sports and sports nutrition

Free radicals are those chemical species which contain one or more unpaired electrons, capable of independent existence. They form in the body due to a variety of reasons as offshoots of cellular activity or as products introduced to the body from the outside.

As an analogy, think of running a car engine as the cellular production and the car emissions a the free radical production. The engine produces products which cannot stay inside the car without further damage. They simply must be neutralized and expelled.

Free radicals form and cause damage by reacting with many substances in your body. It is estimated that upwards of 200,000 free radical attacks occur in our bodies daily.

When free radical damage is done, the body can remove the compounds formed by its cellular repair system. However, if the body cannot handle the free radicals (with antioxidants for example), nor remove the compounds, then disease can be the result.

Contrary to popular opinion, free radicals do not circulate throughout the body. The half-life of most free radicals varies in a range of a few nanoseconds to about 7 seconds duration. That means they will react within the "neighborhood" (a few Angstroms or microns near where the increase in free radicals occurred) …organs, connective tissue, circulatory or nerve tissue, bone or lymphatic material are all candidates for free radical attack.

Wherever they form, they will damage the surrounding areas, unless prevented by the body…So the body does NOT have the luxury of just filtering away any circulatory fluids to find the free radicals. The body's defense systems must be…well…fairly omnipresent to neutralize the effects of free radicals. The antioxidant protective system must be healthy.

Since they are highly reactive substances, they react with all sorts of cell elements readily. But, when they do react with your body cells, they can damage the cells and even kill them. Often, the damage from free radicals can CHANGE the cellular structure enough to cause DISEASE such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and a host of others.

The type of disease that occurs is dependent upon which of the free radical defenses in the body weren't functioning properly and where the free radical attacks occur.

The body has pretty sophisticated antioxidant defense systems. But, the body CAN get overwhelmed in its antioxidant protections against such free radicals…

Indeed, unless antioxidant enhanced sports nutrition (with glyconutrients) are used to offset the increased free radical burden, the BODY will suffer as a result of intensive sports training, stress, and competition.

Glyconutrients VITAL to sports nutrition …

Studies comparing marathon runners who did and did not take glyconutritional sports nutrition supplements were undertaken. The results were reported by the Proceedings of the Fisher Institute For Medical Research ( August 2003, vol.3, no.1). The results "demonstrated strikingly different patterns." Antioxidant protection appeared to be powerfully enhanced against free radicals with glyconutritional supplementation. Thus, the body was protected for several days after the marathon run.

However, when glyconutritional sports nutrition was NOT used, the damaging effects of the free radical burden appeared to remain in the body for about five days. Thus, the subject "consistently excreted higher concentrations of free radical byproducts…" as compared to that of the glyconutritional subject. It should be emphasized that the subject studied WAS TAKING other antioxidants, though not glyconutrition. Despite that fact, the above cited results were obtained.

That's another way of saying that when glyconutritional supplements were not used, the free radical burden upon the body was not lifted. Antioxidant protection does appear to be (significantly) strengthened with glyconutritional sports nutrition. Such antioxidant protection appears to be of benefit for athletes overall, including training, stress, competition and dietary issues.

The glyconutrional revolution in sports nutrition and therapy is just beginning. More studies are being done. More results are coming in concerning free radicals and the capacity of the glyconutrients to boost antioxidant affect against free radicals.

20 Years With the Simpsons

December 30th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Art And Entertainment
Benicio Brown asked:

Matt Groening, created the animated sitcom, “The Simpsons” for Fox Broadcasting Company. The idea came from the lobby of James L. Brooks's office and that’s how this popular adaptation of a dysfunctional family came about. Even the characters were named after his own family members, with the exception of lead character Bart.

On April 19, 1987, “The Simpsons” made their first appearance as shorts in The Tracey Ullman Show. When the initial submission was made, only basic sketches were handed in expecting they would be refined in production stages but they were left as is and that’s the reason why despite modification over the years the Simpsons still have a very rudimentary façade. On December 17, 1989, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire” was the half-hour premiere show.

The Simpsons has been debated since the start with lead character Bart often going scot-free despite wrong doings and this portrayed him as a poor role model for youngsters. It’s portrayal of the middle class American lifestyle symbolized by family members Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson. The backdrop of the show is the fictional town of Springfield, which is filled with characters, and events that are an animated and inspired from American society. Homer Simpson the father is employed as a safety inspector at Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Often his job is at risk as a result of his casual and comic nature. His wife, Marge is a conventional American housewife and mother. Their 3 children are Bart, a ten-year-old menace, Lisa, an aware 8 year old activist and the baby Maggie, who hardly speaks but does communicate by sucking on a pacifier. They have a dog called Santa's Little Helper, and a cat, called Snowball II. Over the years, the show has celebrated even ts but the characters have not aged since the start of the show.

The Simpsons have influenced mainstream society in more ways than one. Language and terms used in this animated sitcom has made its transition into popular everyday vernacular. To the extent that Homer Simpsons popular use of the expression ‘D'oh!’ is listed in the Oxford English Dictionary without its apostrophe. Even the use of the term ‘excellent’ pronounced as ‘eexcelllent’ in the show is used by people around us. The term ‘cheese-eating surrender monkeys"’ referring to the French has been used by popularly by conservative National Review columnist Jonah Goldberg in 2003, when the French opposed the invasion of Iraq proposal. And soon it was popular lingo amongst journalists.

The Simpsons is a legendary show in respect to prime time television programs. This is because initially animated shows were thought to be for kids and airing a complete animated program on prime time for universal viewing was a bold step. Though thought to be an expensive idea, The Simpsons were aired successfully because they cut down on expenses by using Korean animation studios for in-betweening, coloring, and filming. The success of The Simpsons show prompted many others to start animated shows of this nature and for prime time viewing. In its time it has certainly been a pioneering show if its type and still stands tall. In fact the Simpsons are so respected that when South Park achieved success on television they aired an episode “Simpsons Already Did It" as homage to its predecessor.

The Simpsons have been awarded at many occasions. Their booty consists of 23 Emmy Awards, 24 Annie Awards and a Peabody Award. The TIME magazines 1998 publication commemorating the 20th Century's greatest achievements in arts and entertainment, named The Simpsons as the last century's best television series, along with naming Bart Simpson in the list of the century's 100 most influential people. Incidentally Bart was the only imaginary character on the list. At the turn of this century the Simpsons won a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They have also been acclaimed as the greatest television show of the 1990s, 2001's 100 Greatest Kids' TV shows, and 2005's 100 Greatest Cartoons. Homer Simpson has been recognized as the forerunner in 2001's 100 Greatest TV Characters. Other awards include the TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time, and a mention in the TIME's list of 100 Best TV Shows of All Time.

In 2004, they became the longest-running American animated sitcom in the United States. Regardless of criticism over the years, The Simpsons maintains a huge viewer base. The shows first season enjoyed an average of 13.4 million viewers, and the 17th season had an average of 9.2 million viewers per episode, respectively. The Simpsons Movie made $74 million in its opening weekend in the US.

In the end of the last century a number of US public schools banned ‘The Simpsons’ merchandise and t-shirts. In spite of the ban, their merchandise still continued to be popular and generated US$2 billion in revenue in its first 14 months of sales. Their popularity paved the way for them in turning into a billion-dollar merchandizing industry.

Merchandise includes everything you can imagine, from t-shirts to posters. The iconic characters have inspired unique editions of board games, including Clue, Scrabble, Monopoly, Operation, and The Game of Life. Trivia and card games have also been introduced. There are Simpsons comic books and related publications, including 9 comic book series from Bongo Comics publication. The comics have also been made available in book form and there’s episode guides too. There’s numerous soundtrack and other musical releases including music that’s’ not been aired on the show. You can purchase The Simpsons Movie DVDs and DVD boxsets. You can buy video of episodes that have been aired. Seasons one to ten have been released on DVD in many continents. You can even buy The Simpsons video games. This includes The Simpsons, The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants, The Simpsons Road Rage, The Simpsons Hit & Run and The Simpsons Game (2007).

South Carolina Gamecocks – The Pride of Carolina

December 29th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Sports And Fitness
Rick Grantham asked:

The football team of the The University of South Carolina is represented by the South Carolina Gamecocks. Known as the Gamecocks, the team has been called simply "Carolina" for many years. They are a member of the NCAA Division I college football and compete in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference since 1992. The Gamecocks currently play their home games in the Williams-Brice Stadium. Their latest head coach is Steve Spurrier.

Traditionally, USC sports teams were named the Fighting Gamecocks for men's teams and Lady Gamecocks for women's teams but this distinction was later dropped. The official colors of the USC Gamecocks are black and garnet. Some team's merchandise also have the color gold, representing the spurs of gamecocks during cockfights. The family of Dr. J. William Flinn chose the colors garnet and black when they presented a banner to the football team sometime in November 1895. A little after 1900, there was an attempt t change the team's colors. But there was no definite adoption.

The Gamecock Club supports the team's athletic department with private money. Originally, the club was called "Buck-A-Month" (B.A.M.) Club, formed in 1939. It was a fund-raiser solely for the benefit of the athletics programs. Today, according to the SEC the Gamecock Club USC ranks eighth place (out of twelve) when it came to raising funds for the team.

The Gamecocks have won a number of league championships over the years. The Gamecocks also have a strong following and wide fan-base. A reporter for CBS Sports, Tim Brando, commented that there are probably no fans that are more loyal than South Carolina Gamecock fans.

The University of South Carolina formed its first football team in 1892. Their first-ever game was in Charleston on Christmas Eve and they played against Furman. At that time when American football was not yet recognized as a professional sport nor was it that popular nationwide, the Carolina football team was not yet sanctioned by the University. Because of this, the team had to pay for their own train fare going to Charleston, as well as purchase their own uniforms. The News and Courier nicknamed them the "College Boys" and their fans and supporters wore black and garnet when watching a game. The team lost their first game mainly because of their lack of training and inexperience.

In the third season in 1985, Carolina won their first game against Columbia AA. They also got their first head coach, which was W.H. "Dixie" Whaley. In the 1896 season, they played the inaugural game in November 12 against their archrival Clemson. Carolina won that game with a 12-6 record.

In the 1906 season, the school's Board of Trustees banned the team's participation after the faculty protested against the foul chants that students yelled during football games. The board had to reverse its decision, however, after the students and alumni harassed them with petition after petition. In 1907, the Gamecocks were back in the game. The team was hastily put together and competed an abbreviated season, but ended up winning all three games that they played.

John Kortex asked:

Is there a sport that you have always wanted to try out but just haven't had the opportunity? Perhaps there was a sport that you really wanted to play but weren't sure that you'd be good at? What are you waiting for, get out there and start playing! When we are young we often shy away from the sports that we don't think we'll be good at. Luckily, it's never too late to try out a new sport. Who knows, when you try the sport that you've been waiting to try, you just might be really great at it.

When you consider trying a new sport you need to think about how much time you'll be able to dedicate to the sport. Should you play on your own for a while until you gain the confidence to play with others? Do you want to be involved in a fun league or a competitive league? How often can you really fit this new sport into your life? When you answer all these questions you'll be ready to play and you can find the place and the time to do it.

If you've really never played any sports before and you are ready to try something new, you'll want to get with your doctor to discuss your overall health. Every time you are going to really change up what you are doing physically you'll want to meet with your doctor to discuss your exercise regime so that you are adding sports to your life in the best way possible. Your doctor can make sure that your body is ready for such a sport, and also give you pointers if you are incorporating the sport to lose weight and get in shape as well as for fun.

Fun leagues are often the best way to get into a new sport. These leagues usually are not very competitive at all, so there is no pressure to get really good right away. You can learn the sport, practice with people who will be able to give you pointers, and sort of work your way into a comfortable place. Once you get comfortable with the sport, you might want to think about joining a more competitive league. Or, stick with the fun leagues to just have fun, and keep moving while playing your new sport.

Trying out a new sport can be a bit scary, but it should also be exciting. Don't worry if you aren't all star material when you first start playing, just be proud of yourself for getting out there and finally attempting what you've always been afraid to do! Playing sports is a great form of exercise and can boost your confidence in many areas of your life. Go out and attempt the sport that you've always wanted to play, you just might find that you are really good at it, it's fun, and you'll meet some great friends along the way, too.

As if Things Weren’t Tough Enough…

Majestic Help asked:

As If Things Weren’t Tough Enough…

Basketball season ground to a difficult halt for the Florida Gators several weeks ago, but considering the fact that the team lost their experienced players at the end of last season, the young, inexperienced current team fought the best it could as far as the NIT finals. It wasn’t a pretty end, but experience is a hard, but great, teacher, and this team learned some lessons that wil help it come out more stable next season.

Moving on to football and the world of the bizarre at Florida, here’s the latest turn of events. Keep in mind that this didn’t happen during the season on the field. It happened while the Gators were moving into new offices.

Somehow, someone thought it was a good idea to put the national title trophy with the crystal football perched on top of it, onto a table that was obviously not too stable. A recruit accidentally bumped the table, sending the trophy crashing to pieces on the floor.

The silver lining to all this is that the Gators had already ordered a second trophy when they won the national title in the first place. In addition, the trophy that is in pieces was insured for $8,000 so that it can be replaced.

Too bad they can’t insure a tough season the same way. Oh well, the trophy will be replaced, and maybe there’s a shot at playing well enough for a new one next season – in any sport.

Why You Require a Credit Card From Bankofamerica.com/mynewcard

December 29th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Credit
Clint Jhonson asked:

The credit card which was introduced way back in 1920, has today become an important part of our lives. It is almost impossible to live in this 21st century without having a credit card. Bank of America provides its existing and future customers an easy procedure to apply for credit cards at bankofamerica.com/mynewcard or mynewcard.com. These websites are extremely safe (you can see a lock symbol at the bottom right of your monitor screen which indicates so) and designed in such a way that the customer is absolutely sure about security when he chooses to apply for a Bank of America credit card.

One of the chief motives of owning a credit card is the convenience and ease it provides. Instead of carrying a lot of cash in the wallet all the time, a person can just take along his credit card without having to worry about being pick-pocketed. Neither do you have to worry about producing the exact change. It makes life a lot easier. Bankofamerica.com/mynewcard gives you quite a few credit cards to choose from.

Credit cards come in very handy on the when one is traveling. Some airlines today do not allow a passenger to book a ticket unless they use the credit card. And most hotels too ask for credit card information to make a reservation. The website mynewcard.com which is operated by the Bank of America is a VeriSign Secured Site and needs a Personal Security Code to be fed in before the person can get access to the site. Mynewcard.com has been developed by the Bank of America to facilitate the awarding of credit cards to its customers.

Bankofamerica.com/mynewcard lets you choose from about 400 cards; there are cash back cards, airline cards, student cards, sports cards and many more. Credit cards are extremely useful on the internet to buy anything that you want. Today the internet is growing and becoming the market of the future; soon there will be stage when we do all our shopping on the internet, whether it is our household appliances, gadgets, diapers for the baby or our veggies. And all this we will be doing from the comfort of our home at just about any time that we choose.

Three of the most popular cards at mynewcard.com include:

Bank of America Rewards American Express Card:

This card which you can also get at Bankofamerica.com/mynewcard gives you a 0% introductory APR (Annual Percentage Rate) on balance transfers and cash advance checks for the initial 12 billing cycles. Other benefits that come with the card are exceptional features that let you save on expenditure, shopping, eating out, travel, accommodation, entertainment, etc.

Bank of America WorldPoints Mastercard Credit Card:

This yet another well-liked card provided by mynewcard.com or bankofamerica.com/mynewcard. It has nearly the same features as the Rewards Card which includes the zero percent introductory APR on balance transfers and cash advance checks for the initial 12 billing cycles. Besides, there are exceptional offers of cash back, bonuses when you have shopped for branded merchandise, gift certificates and reward points on accommodation and travel.

U.S. Airways Visa Signature:

Mynewcard.com or bankofamerica.com/mynewcard lets you apply for the Airways card which includes zero percent introductory APR on balance transfers and purchases for the initial 6 billing cycles. The distinct feature of this card is the Companion Certificate which gives you a $99 value each year, besides preference in boarding and check-in.

Although there is a downside to using credit cards because of identity theft, credit card companies are improving at tacking the same. Most credit card companies have become so good in handling identity theft cases that most of the time, if a credit card is stolen, it does not cost the owner anything at all.
